Exterior Restoration, Chowan County Courthouse
Edenton, NC

This project involved the design of the wood shingle reroofing of this structure built in 1767.

Roof investigation, consultation with the North Carolina State Historic Preservation office, and research for materials were all part of the preliminary design process.

Shingles were hand split from cypress logs, dredged from the swamps of Florida. Extensive detailing was required for swept valleys, fanned hips and the cone-shaped roof of the apse.
